Chapter 9: Heat, Day Two
Eliot woke in the dark with his face wet and his body on fire, and August already had his arms around him.
"Hey. Hey. I've got you."
"It's coming back."
"I know. I'm here. Breathe."
"I thought it would," Eliot said, and his voice broke in the middle. "I thought it would stop when you were done with me."
August's arms tightened.
"I am not done with you."
"That's not what..."
"I know what you meant." He kissed his temple, hard. "I'm not done with you. I'm not going to be done with you. Drink this."
He held a glass to Eliot's mouth.
It was water with electrolytes, and Eliot drank it all with August's big palm cradling the back of his skull.
The suite was a wreck.
The sheets had been changed twice, and there was a pile of them in the corner.
There was a tray on the floor with the ruins of a dinner.
A note was propped against the door, in a hand he knew.
*Told the board you both have the flu. Told the lab it's contagious. Told HR to stay away. Food is outside. Eat the protein bars, Aug. You're not a god. M.*
Eliot read it and began to laugh, weakly, into August's chest.
"She knows."
"Audra knows everything. She's known since the lobby."
"She said we both have the flu."
"She's a lawyer."
The laughter took the edge off, but only for a minute.
The ache came up under it, and Eliot's thighs clenched, and slick spilled onto the clean sheet.
"Shower," he said.
"What?"
"I want a shower. I'm sticky. And I want you in it."
August carried him.
The bathroom was white marble and glass, with a rainfall head the size of a dinner plate.
