Chapter 18: No Terms Tonight
Imogen's POV
I was seven months pregnant when I took Brogan to my father's print shop.
Four months had passed since the day she was charged, and Vera wore a monitor on her ankle at her lawyer's house in Winnetka, and her hearing was set for next month.
Dalton had not been seen since the day he walked her out the side door of the jail.
Brogan had four men on the street and a rule that I did not go anywhere alone, and I had stopped arguing.
He had also changed.
Since the day Vera was charged, he had been careful with me in a way I had not asked for.
He knocked before he came into the kitchen.
He waited at the foot of the stairs until I said yes, and he never once reached for me first.
I had asked him why, and he had said, "Terms," and gone to his study.
So I drove us to Pilsen on a Saturday, with his man following in the second car, and I unlocked the shop with the key from my father's old ring.
The first paycheck I ever earned from the Reeve board had paid the tailor.
The second had paid the back rent on this room.
Dust lay on everything, but the press was still there, big and black and bolted to the floor, with my father's apron on its hook.
The whole place smelled of ink and old paper, and I stood in the doorway and had to breathe through my nose.
"Imogen," Brogan said.
"I grew up upstairs," I said. "I did my homework on that table. He used to let me pull the lever on Christmas cards."
He looked around slowly.
He did not touch anything.
"It's a good room," he said.
"It's the only one I ever had that was mine."
