Chapter 6: On the Record

"Less than a day," Dalton said.

He said it to the room, and the three men behind him lifted their cameras.

"I file for divorce on Sunday night, and by Monday afternoon she has married my brother. Does anyone need me to explain what that means?"

The flashes went off one after another.

The clerk stood up behind her desk and said, "Sir, this is a government office."

"My wife is a government matter," Dalton said.

"I'm not your wife," I said.

My voice shook, but it came out.

The cameras turned to me.

A reporter in the front row, a thin man with a recorder, pushed forward.

"Mrs. Buckley, is the child Brogan Buckley's?"

I looked at Dalton.

He was smiling a little.

He wanted the answer I couldn't give him.

If I said yes, I was the woman in his photographs.

If I said no, I was a liar who had just married the man in them.

"Here is what I know," I said, to the recorder and to every lens in the room. "On Sunday night, in front of two members of his board and his mother, Dalton Reeve said that my child is not his."

"Imogen," Dalton said.

"He said, gentlemen, you heard me. He asked them to remember it."

Dalton's lawyer stepped forward and put a hand on his sleeve, and Dalton shook it off.

"So I took him at his word," I said. "A man who says a child isn't his has no right to ask whose it is."
