Valeria's POV
I looked at the ring, and then at the naked surgeon kneeling on my bedroom floor, and said the only thing that made sense.
"I have terms."
His mouth twitched.
"Of course you do," Rhys said.
"Write this down," I said.
"I'm naked, Valeria. I have no pockets."
"Memorize it, then," I said. "You're good at that."
I pulled the quilt up to my armpits and sat cross-legged on the iron bed with the streetlight on my shoulders.
I counted on my fingers.
"One. I keep my name. I am Dr. Hartigan, and our daughter can be Gallagher-Hartigan, and if she hates it she can pick her own at eighteen."
"Agreed," Rhys said.
"Two. I finish my residency. All five years. You never supervise me, you never sign my evaluations, and when I get paged at three in the morning, you get up and take the baby."
"Agreed, with pleasure," he said.
"Three. We live here."
He looked around the bare room.
"In this house."
"My house. You can bring the chairs."
"The chairs are coming," he said gravely. "I've been wanting to bring the chairs."
"Four." I took a breath. "You don't go quiet. If it's too much, you tell me it's too much, out loud, in words. You can say 'I can't talk yet,' and I'll give you an hour. But you say it to me. You don't walk out into a parking lot."
