Chapter 9: Technically a Date

"Technically," Rhys said, "this is a date."

He was standing in Jody's kitchen in an apron that said KISS THE INTERN, which Jody had bought as a joke two years earlier and never retired.

He had a wooden spoon in one hand and smoke coming off the stove.

"It's a hostage situation," Jody said from the couch. "You're cooking in my house."

"I've operated on a ruptured aorta. I can boil pasta."

"The pasta is on fire."

"It's browning."

I laughed so hard I had to sit down on the arm of the couch.

It was Thursday night, and for the first time in two weeks nobody was hunting me.

Lenore had been told to keep her distance.

Bridget had gone quiet.

My stepmother had stopped calling.

The three of us ate on the floor around Jody's coffee table, because the dining table was covered in dissection atlases.

The pasta was salty and slightly charred, and Rhys watched me take the first bite with the anxious attention of a man defusing a bomb.

"Well?"

"It's terrible."

"I'll take it."

"It's terrible," I said, "and I'm having seconds."

His whole face changed.

I realized, with a small shock, that I'd made him happy with a plate of burned noodles.

Jody pointed her fork at him.

"Rules for the baby daddy," she said. "One. Nobody makes her cry unless it's the good kind. Two. You learn to cook one real thing. Three. When she craves pickles at three a.m., you go."

"What if there are no pickles?"

"You find pickles."

"I'll find pickles," Rhys said, gravely.

"Four. If you break her heart, I'll be your ghost. I'll haunt your OR. I'll unplug your beeping things."
