Chapter 12: Ember
"What do you mean, you know her?"
Torin didn't answer right away.
The engine ticked.
Out beyond the windshield, the lake lay flat and black under a bruised sky.
"Fourteen years ago," he said. "I was twenty-seven. Gus took me through the Lantern door for the first time. He said I'd earned it."
"And?"
"There was a woman at the foot of his chair. She wore a black dress and a collar. They called her Ember."
I didn't breathe.
"She looked at me when I came in. Straight at me. Nobody else in the room, only me."
"And?"
"She mouthed a single word."
"What did she say?"
"Please."
The car was very quiet.
"I looked away," he said.
"I told myself she was a grown woman who'd signed a contract. I told myself everyone in that room was there by choice."
"I asked Gus afterward, in the car. He said she was his devoted submissive, bound for life, and some people needed that. He called it a kind of love."
His voice broke on the last word.
"And you believed him."
"I wanted to."
"For fourteen years."
"I never saw her again. I never asked. I never knew she had a daughter. I never knew her name."
I got out of the car.
The wind off the lake hit my face.
I walked out onto the gravel and turned back.
He had got out too and stood in the headlights with his hands open at his sides.
I hit him.
I slapped him across the face with all the strength in my arm, and the crack carried over the water.
His head turned.
He didn't lift a hand.
He turned back to face me, with the print of my fingers coming up red on his cheek.
