Chapter 19: The Request
The form of the question was Gus's own, and Torin had taught it to me word for word.
I knelt on the cushion beside my mother so that our eyes were level.
"Ember," I said. "Do you ask to be released? Answer with your own mouth."
The Chapter leaned forward in its chairs.
Gus stood behind her with his hand resting at the back of her neck, under the pinned hair.
"Tell her what you told me this morning," he said, very softly.
My mother's eyes were fixed on my collar.
"I am content, miss," she said.
"Is that your voice?"
"I am content."
"Mum. Is that your voice?"
Her lips trembled once, and then pressed together.
Gus's fingers moved on her nape.
"There," he said. "The Chapter has heard."
Chairs scraped along the north wall.
The white-haired judge nodded slowly, with the look of a woman who was relieved.
"The law is satisfied," she said.
"The law is not satisfied," said Billie from the door.
Every head turned.
Billie had not moved from the Rail.
She held her clipboard to her chest like a shield.
"A sub who has been held by fear can say content," she said.
