My mother sat at the head of my father's table with her hands in her lap.
It was the second Sunday in November, and the house in Lakewood smelled of burnt pot roast.
My father had cooked it himself.
He stood at the stove in an apron with his arm still in a sling, scraping the roasting pan with a spoon.
"It's fine," he said. "It's a little dark."
"Gareth," my mother said.
"Yes?"
"Sit down."
He sat.
She had not touched him since the night on the gravel.
She had come home with me for the first week, to my Tremont apartment, and slept for two days with the window open.
Then she had come here, to the house she'd left, and asked for the room at the back that used to be her sewing room.
My father slept on the couch in the den.
He had not asked for one thing.
Tonight, beside her plate, lay a single brass house key on a ring.
"That's yours," he said. "It always was. I put the deed in your name on Tuesday. I did it before the lawyers asked."
My mother looked at the key.
She did not pick it up.
"I'll keep it where I can see it," she said at last.
"That's all I want."
"It isn't, but it's a start."
He bowed his head.
She reached across the table, took the salt, and put it beside his plate.
It was the smallest thing, and he stared at it as if it were a letter.
Torin sat across from me in his plain grey suit.
My mother turned her eyes on him.
"I have my question for the month," she said.
"Yes, ma'am."
"What did you think my name was?"
