Chapter 22: The Brides Come Anyway
Mauro didn't get up.
He put the next pearl on the thread and pulled it snug.
"Tell my uncle I'll be there," he said. "Tell him I'll bring the veil."
The capo laughed again, but less.
He looked at me, then at the card lying on the lace, then at the Don's steady hands.
He left without the last word.
The card sat on my veil until I picked it up with two fingers and dropped it in the trash.
The phone rang the next morning at eight.
"Giada, honey." It was the capo's sister, the mother of the girl with the lace sleeves. "I'm so sorry. We're going to go another way."
"The gown's half done."
"I know, honey. Keep the deposit."
"I don't want the deposit. I want to know who told you."
There was a long breath on the line.
"You know who," she said, and hung up.
At eight-twenty it rang again.
At nine.
At nine-fifteen.
By ten o'clock all six of my family brides had canceled.
Three called.
Two had their mothers call.
One came in person, the youngest, nineteen, with her mother waiting in the car with the engine running.
