Chapter 17: The Waiting Room
I was on my knees beside him before I knew I'd moved.
Breathing. He was breathing. His pulse was fast and thready under my fingers, but it was there.
"Papa. Papa, it's me."
His eyes opened a slit. One was already swelling shut.
"Cara," he said. "Don't step on the cups."
I laughed and sobbed in the same breath.
The captain's wife from the window was in the doorway with her phone already at her ear, giving the address to 911.
Papa grabbed my wrist.
"He wanted March," he whispered. "The book. I told him it's in my head."
"Don't talk."
"I told him, you want March, you have to take my head." Something like a smile. "So he tried."
The ambulance took ten minutes.
I rode in the back and held his hand.
I read his monitor like a chart. If I read it like my father, I'd come apart.
Broken cheekbone. Three cracked ribs. A concussion.
He'd live.
I sat in the waiting room in my sweater with his blood dried on my knees.
Leandro came at one in the morning.
He didn't say anything. He sat down beside me and put his coat around my shoulders.
