Chapter 27: The Church Steps
For a second the whole church was silent.
Then Silvia found her voice.
"Get her out." It came out high and cracked. "Somebody get her out of here. She's sick. She's been sick since July."
Two captains stood up in the front pew.
"Sit down," Vittorio said.
He said it the way his father used to, and they sat.
He stepped away from the font and stood beside me. "Let her talk."
I took the lab page out of my coat pocket and unfolded it.
"This is a paternity test," I said.
"I carried the swabs to the lab myself," Vittorio said.
I held the page up to the front pews. "Zero percent."
"Labs make mistakes," Silvia said. "The clinic made a mistake. Everybody knows that."
"Then the dates matter," I said.
"On March fourth my father filled progesterone for Silvia Corsetti. Pregnancy support. Two and a half months before the clinic."
Papa stood up in the fifth pew in his funeral suit.
"I filled it," he said. "My initials. I remember. It was a Tuesday."
