Chapter 28: Confession
Every face on the steps turned to Vittorio.
The Corsettis at the top. The Iannones on the sidewalk below. The night-window women in between, in their church coats.
Nobody said a word.
Vittorio stood in the doorway of the church.
Then he came down the steps.
He walked past the four men in overcoats. Past his captains. Past the agent holding Davide's arm.
He stopped on the bottom step, in the salt and the snow, facing the sidewalk.
Facing Leandro, and Nonna on his arm, and eight Iannone men with their hats in their hands.
"He's right," Vittorio said.
His voice carried up the steps.
"Three years ago, a week after my brother's funeral, I walked into the Iannone bakery on 18th Avenue."
A captain on the top step said, "Don Vittorio..."
"Be quiet." He didn't turn around. "I shot a baker in his own kitchen. He was twenty-four. He had done nothing."
Nonna's hand tightened on Leandro's sleeve.
"I did it for something his family never did."
The snow ticked on the steps.
