Chapter 30: Through the Glass
"Not now," I said.
The lawyer nodded.
"Of course. I'll leave my card." He set it on the tray table by the door. "He said to tell you it's your decision. He said you'd know that already."
He left.
Leandro sat back down by the window.
The baby was asleep on my chest with her fist in her mouth.
"You don't have to," he said.
"I know."
"If you want to, I'll drive you."
"You'd drive me to see him?"
"I'd drive you anywhere." He shrugged. "I'd sit in the parking lot and eat a sandwich."
I looked down at her.
One day she would ask. Every kid on Court Street asks.
"I want to be able to tell her I took her," I said. "Once. So she never has to wonder if he saw her."
Leandro nodded.
"Then I'll bring two sandwiches."
Two weeks later, on a gray Thursday in March, we drove to the federal jail by the water in Sunset Park.
Leandro parked in the visitors' lot and turned the engine off.
"I'll be here," he said.
"You can come in."
