Chapter 22: Arrested at the Table

Dalton's POV

Roxanne crossed the room with her phone held out in front of her.

She put it into the detective's hand.

"It's called T underscore copy," she said. "He sent it to me six years ago at three in the morning, to keep me quiet. He told me he had my brother-in-law's wife on a leash. He told me the boy was his."

"Roxanne," Bradley said, low.

"He laughed about it. He said Dalton would never find out because Dalton never looked." Her voice broke. "I watched him pay for my dinner with money from her. I thought it was funny. I thought I was the one who was clever."

"Ms. Lund," the detective said. "I'll need to take this as evidence. Do you understand that you've had it for six years?"

"Yes."

"We'll talk about that separately."

Roxanne nodded, crying.

She did not look at me, and I did not want her to.

The room was loud now, all the old men talking at once.

Bradley turned slowly, with his glass in his hand and his smile mostly gone.

His eyes moved down the table until they found the gray suit.

"Tell them," he said.

Melanie's vice president had gone the color of paper.

"I don't know what you mean."

"Tell them she's been lying to you for years. Tell them what she said about him in her office."

"Mr. Ames, I'm not part of..."

"You work for me."

The words fell into the silence.

She heard them a second after everyone else did.

I took Melanie's phone from my jacket and held it up so the table could see the screen.

"Nine days ago, this message came in," I said. "'Did he buy it? R is asking.' Melanie didn't write it. This woman did."

"That's private," the vice president said shrilly.

"The next morning she wrote again. 'R says don't let him change his mind. Stay close to him Saturday.'" I looked at Bradley. "Who is R?"
