Chapter 24: The Red Boat

The doctor cut the cast off on a Tuesday.

Eric walked out of the clinic on his own two legs, holding my hand and his mother's.

He walked the whole parking lot.

He walked it twice, to prove it.

"Can I run?" he asked.

"Slowly," Melanie said.

"How slowly?"

"Slowly enough that I can watch your feet."

He ran at a slow, stiff-legged trot to the truck and slapped the door.

Melanie put her hand over her mouth and laughed until she cried.

Eight weeks ago I had stood in a hospital corridor with coffee running over my knuckles.

I had not known a man could be given this back.

The detective had called that morning, on the way to the clinic.

Bradley had taken a plea.

The woman from the old settlement had come forward the day after the dinner, with her mother.

When the detective finished she had said, "Thank you," and nothing else.

Afterward she had held my hand across the console the whole way to the clinic, and not let go at the lights.

Now she wiped her face and came over to me.

"Boat?" she said.

"Boat."

"Red?"

"It's always been red."

The boat sat at the end of my father's old dock at the lake, forty feet from the house where I had been raised.

It was a small wooden cruiser with a brass rail, and I had bought it three weeks ago and sanded it on weekends.

Eric stopped at the foot of the dock and stared.

"Dad."
