Chapter 10: The Guard Post

Every wolf in the yard turned to look at me.

Dad had just made it a fight.

He knew I was a healer, not a warrior.

He knew Wylie didn't have a wolf.

I walked up to the bottom of the packhouse steps and looked up at him.

"What time do your guards go on?"

"Sundown."

"Then I'll see them at sundown."

His face went a darker red.

I turned and walked out the gate with Wylie beside me.

Arlene spent the afternoon sharpening Gran's kitchen knives on the cottage step, loudly.

"I'm not saying I'll use them," she said. "I'm saying they'll be sharp."

Wylie sat beside her with his elbows on his knees, watching the cedars.

"You don't have to come," I told him.

"It's my bath."

"Your heart stopped two nights ago."

"Then I'd better hurry and get my wolf back before it happens again." He looked up at me. "I'm not hiding in the cottage while you go fight your father's guards, Freja."

"I'm not going to fight them."

"What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to walk past them."

Arlene snorted and kept sharpening.

At sundown we walked out the back door of the cottage toward the cedar ring.

The Moonwell was forty steps away through the trees.

Three wolves stood across the path in the gap between the trunks.

Two were boys, eighteen or nineteen, shifting from foot to foot.

The third was my brother.

Ansel stood in the middle of the path with his arms folded, in a Stonemere jacket.

"Go back inside, Freja."

"No."

"Dad said anyone who passes answers to him."

"Dad isn't here. You are."

I stopped an arm's length from him.

"So if somebody's going to make me answer, it's you. Wolf to wolf. Go ahead."

The two boys looked at each other.

Ansel's jaw worked.

He outweighed me by eighty pounds.
