Chapter 20: Night On The Lake
The housekeeper opened the door of the lakeshore house, took one look at the two of us, and went to bed.
She didn't say good night.
She was smiling when she turned away.
Leon shut the door behind me, and the whole house went quiet around us.
"I put your things back in the white room on Friday," he said. "I haven't touched them since."
"You said you slept in the study."
"I did."
"On the couch."
"On the couch."
"Your back must hurt."
"It does."
"Good," I said, and I climbed the stairs without waiting for him.
The white room was exactly how I'd left it.
White bed, white rug, and the long window full of black water with a line of lights on the far shore.
I stood in front of the glass, because I didn't know what else to do with my hands.
I heard the door.
Two soft knocks, slow and even.
I turned around.
He was standing in the open doorway, with the hall light behind him, and he had knocked on a door that was already open.
"You did that on the first night," I said.
"I did."
"The door's open, Leon."
"I know. I wanted to knock."
"I'm still angry at you."
"Be angry."
"I'm going to be angry the whole time."
"Good," he said, and he walked in and shut the door behind him with his heel.
