Chapter 24: Mrs. DeGraff
On the last night of the year, a Wednesday, I sat on the white bed at eleven-twenty and watched the clock on the nightstand.
Leon stood in the doorway in his shirtsleeves with his arms folded.
He had been unbearable for three hundred and forty-one days.
He had asked me at breakfast.
He had asked me in the car.
He had once taped a note to the bathroom mirror that said, ONLY IF YOU WANT TO, and underneath it, in smaller letters, PLEASE.
"Forty minutes," he said.
"Thirty-nine."
"You're counting."
"I count everything. You've read the book."
"I did," he said. "I plan to again, if you hand it to me."
"Maybe tonight."
He crossed the room and sat beside me on the mattress, close, with his thigh against mine.
For a while neither of us said anything.
Down on the lake a ship was moving slowly across the dark with all its lights on.
"Shawna's party was loud," I said.
"The banner said Happy Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Merrick."
"She'll never get it right."
