Chapter 17: The Draw

Gillian's POV

They had put him in the cold room.

It was the same room where the false wall had been, behind the second cooler, and someone had spent a night bolting bars across it.

There was a cot inside, a cup on a hook, and Ezra sitting on the edge with his hands between his knees.

He looked up when I came through the cooler door, and he smiled a little.

"Hi," he said. "I'm sorry about the ten minutes."

"Don't."

"It was the only thing I could think of."

"Please don't break anything else. I like the door off the last one."

I would have said more, but the Commissioner came in behind me with the Terminal's doctor and two guards.

He was carrying a folding case, the kind that holds vials.

"What is that?"

"A courtesy. Mr. Kovac has agreed to help us."

"No, I haven't," Ezra said.

"He has agreed in principle."

"I haven't done that either."

The Commissioner sighed.

He nodded to the guards.

They opened the bars and went in, and one took each of Ezra's arms.

"Gillian," Ezra said. "Don't."

I had the axe on my hip, and my feet had already moved.

A third guard stepped across me, and laid a baton flat against my collarbone.

He didn't strike.

He only held me there, with the weight of his arm.

"Please," the Commissioner said. "I'm told you're a sensible woman."
