Chapter 21: The Reception

The man in the gray suit walked up the aisle.

He was lean and tired-looking, with a lanyard from a bank I recognized from the top of three loan agreements.

"I received an email on Tuesday," he said to the whole church, pleasantly. "It was addressed to our fraud line, and it attached thirty-eight pages. I came to see for myself."

Tabitha, at the altar in her wedding dress, said nothing.

"The reception is at the Halcyon, I understand," he said. "I'd like to attend. So would our counsel. And two officers who are waiting outside."

Gwen made a noise.

"This is a wedding," she said.

"It was," said the old chairman, rising from the third pew on his cane. "Gwendolyn, I paid for your seat on the Conservancy with a handshake. I'd like to see my own hand again."

Nobody laughed.

They all went anyway.

Four hundred people filed out of St. Aldric's and into a hundred cars.

They drove four blocks to a ballroom, because nobody on earth wanted to miss it.

The Merriweather Room was set for a wedding that wasn't happening.

White roses, silver candelabra, a cake six tiers high, and a table with a bride's name in calligraphy.

I had paid the deposit myself, last spring, out of my own account, for my own wedding.

I stood at the door with Dal at my back.
