Chapter 16: The Rescue

We reached the Westerfield yard a minute before they did.

The cousin dropped me at the loader gate with the ledger wrapped in a bread tray.

The old woman from next door was waiting there in her car, with her beagle on the passenger seat.

I handed the tray through her window.

"Flour bin," she said. "Don't thank me."

Then I walked into my father's yard.

Behind the main building a crowd of well-dressed people stood on the loading apron in hard hats.

A tall man with a senator's silver hair was shaking the hand of the yard foreman.

The fiancee stood beside her mother, in a camel coat and borrowed boots.

Dalton came out of the side door at a half run with two of his men.

Between them walked Katie.

Her cardigan was torn at the shoulder, and a red mark covered one cheek.

Dalton had her by the elbow, and he was smiling at the senator's wife.

"A family emergency," he called. "My apologies, ladies. One moment."

"Let go of me," Katie said, loud and clear.

She had seen the guests.

She dug in her heels.

"I'm being held against my will. This man hit me. Somebody call the police."

The senator's wife drew a breath.

Dalton's smile cracked.

"She's confused," he said. "She's very ill."

I did not run.

I walked to the red truck under the tarp at the back of the yard, and I pulled the tarp away with one hand.

Old Number One stood there, chrome and dust.
