Chapter 11: The Gate

The guard had my arm above the elbow and it did not feel like a hand.

It felt like a vice with a pulse.

The gate was in front of me. Iron bars, and behind them a corridor going down.

Down and down and down, with a red glow at the bottom.

I got my feet under me and pulled.

The guard didn't even slow.

"Fin," I said.

Nothing.

"Fin."

I turned my head as far as it would go.

Fin was standing where he'd been standing, at the edge of the crowd.

His hands were still behind his back.

The crowd had gone quiet. Forty people watching me get dragged.

The VP was looking at the floor.

Draven was looking at me with his head tilted.

The guard got me to the gate.

The bars didn't open. It just walked me through them, and the iron went through my coat like water.

Cold. So cold it took my breath.

Inside was the corridor.

It sloped down. The red glow was a long way off and getting closer.

"Fin."

The guard stopped.

Because Fin was standing in the doorway.

He had gotten there before us. I don't know how.

He stood in the gate with his arms at his sides and the black hand showing.

"You'll want to step aside," the guard said.

"No."

"You know the law."

"I know the law."

"Then step aside."

"No."

The guard let go of my arm.
