Chapter 8: Lust

I didn't sleep. There was nowhere to sleep.

People sat against the walls in groups and talked in low voices.

I sat alone with my back to a column and watched Fin across the Hall.

He stood at the door with his right hand in his pocket.

He didn't move for hours. He didn't look at me either.

The VP came over once.

He stood in front of me for a while and then said, "He's lying about the lever."

"Draven pulled it."

"My son says he fell."

"Your son pulled it and left me in a sealed room."

The VP looked down at my bandaged hand.

Then he walked away without saying anything else.

That was the first time in seven years he had spoken to me at all.

Fin called the third trial when the light in the Hall went dim.

"Lust," he said. "Follow."

We went through a door I hadn't seen before.

The room on the other side had no walls.

Not really. There were shapes at the edges, dark and soft, but they moved.

The floor was warm.

"Stand where you are," Fin said. "One at a time. It comes to you."

The light went low and the room filled up with something that wasn't quite air.

A woman from design made a sound.

A man near me said, "Oh."

I looked around and the room was full of people and every one of them was staring at something I couldn't see.
