Chapter 7: Fully Recorded

The Strathmore house stood at the edge of the lake, and it had a dining table that seated twenty.

Tonight it seated six.

Becky sat across from Kendrick in a borrowed dark green dress that Max had somehow found in her size, with the gold band on her finger and her spine straight.

At the head of the table sat Kendrick's uncle, a smooth man in his fifties who had already looked at her hands twice.

Beside him were his two grown sons, who looked at their plates.

Wendell sat at the far end, eating with every sign of enjoyment.

"So," the uncle said. "A hallway."

"A hallway," Becky said. "In the Lakeshore Grand. I came out of my own wedding and he was sitting there."

"You came out of your own wedding."

"My groom had left. Your nephew had lost his bride. We were both dressed."

One of the cousins coughed into his napkin.

"How very convenient," the uncle said. "A week ago Kendrick was engaged to a woman of excellent family. Today he's married to"

"An assistant pastry manager," Becky said. "I make croissants. They're good."

"They are," Wendell said. "I've seen the photographs."

"You haven't," said the uncle.

"I have a very large imagination."

Under the table, something touched her hand.

It was Kendrick's, and it did not grip, but it rested on hers, warm and slow.

She had told him he could, in the suite, once.

She had not said he could keep it there.

She turned her palm up, and his fingers slid into hers.

"No family, I understand," the uncle went on, and his eyes were pleasant. "I'm sure that makes this very hard. It must be strange to marry into a house like ours with nobody to stand beside you."
