Chapter 8: Storm

Becky went down the stairs with her shoes in her hand.

Max stood at the front door, waiting.

"Ma'am, I can send him off."

"I'd like to do it," she said. "Stay where you can see me."

She took an umbrella from the stand and opened the door, and the rain hit the porch roof in a long, steady roar.

Colby heard the door and came up the drive.

Up close he was a ruin.

His suit was black with water, his hair was plastered flat, and he had lost a shoe somewhere.

"Becky." He stopped at the bottom of the steps. "Thank God. I need to talk to you."

"Talk."

"She lied to me." His voice cracked. "Vanessa. There was no accident. She texted me ten minutes ago that she needs space, and then her phone went dead. She used me to get out of something. I don't know what."

"She used you to get out of a wedding," Becky said. "Her own."

He stared at her.

"I told you at the hotel. It was a wedding to the man whose ring is on my hand."

"That's not possible."

"Ask your father who owns his building."

Colby wiped the water from his face.

For a moment she saw him really take it in, and she saw nothing she wanted to see in it.

He was not sorry for her.

He was sorry for himself, and he was working out how to use her to stop.

"Then it's over with her," he said. "I'm done. I swear. I was a fool for five years, and I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you."

"Colby."

"Come home. Annul it, or whatever you do. That man isn't a husband, he's a stunt. You don't even know him. I'm what you know."

"I know exactly what you are," Becky said. "You shoved me onto a floor in front of two hundred people. You said I was selfish, and then you looked for a woman who lied to you."

"I was upset!"

"You were upset in front of my coworkers. You were upset five years in a row."
