Chapter 13: Her Own Door
I did not reply to Cody's message.
I put the phone face-down and looked at the trash bag by my door.
Then I picked up the bag and carried it down to the dumpster, all four flights, and felt a little lighter.
At eight the next morning I drove to Voigt Spirits.
The headquarters sat in a converted warehouse on the river, all glass and brushed steel, with a copper still on a plinth in the lobby.
A receptionist in a gray blazer sat behind a long white desk.
A dozen people stood or sat nearby with coffee, in lanyards.
Cody was one of them.
He was leaning on the reception desk in his quarter-zip, laughing at something a woman in a pencil skirt had said.
I walked straight across the polished floor in my scrubs and my sneakers.
"Cody," I said.
He turned.
His smile came up automatically, the one for clients, and then he saw my face.
"Jeanie. Hey. This isn't a great time."
"It's an excellent time. I have a question."
"I'm kind of in a meeting."
"You're standing at a desk."
The woman in the pencil skirt looked from him to me, and her eyebrows rose.
The receptionist stopped typing.
"Where's my money?" I said.
Cody's smile held, but his eyes darted to the side.
"We can talk outside."
"We can talk here. I'm not sure you've been hearing the question. Where is my forty-one thousand dollars?"
"It's in a safe place."
"Which place?"
"Jean. Come on."
"You took it in cash, at 8:40 on the morning of our wedding. Then at ten you texted me not to look for you. Two weeks before that, a woman wrote you a cashier's check for sixty thousand dollars, and you cashed that too."
For a second the lobby was perfectly still.
