Chapter 18: The Glass
The zipper stopped halfway up my back, and Torsten's mouth was on my shoulder.
The cheval mirror in the corner of the bedroom showed us both.
I wore the dark green dress I had bought for the Supper, and it hung open to my waist.
He stood behind me, enormous, with his shirt off and his chin on the top of my head.
"I can't do it," I said to the glass. "Tomorrow. Stand up in front of three hundred people and make my father say it."
"Why not?"
"Because it's what he does." My voice wobbled. "He sees a thing in his way and he moves it."
"Sue."
"I'm about to move four people in front of the whole harbor. I'm his daughter. What if that's all it is?"
His hands came around my waist.
He turned me to face the mirror, with his big palms spread on my stomach, and he met my eyes in the glass.
"Look at her," he said.
"Torsten," I said.
"Look. That's the woman who took off a shirt in front of two hundred people and asked a mechanic to marry her."
"That was a bad idea," I said.
"It's the best thing anyone's ever done to me."
He kissed the side of my neck.
"Your father buys people," he said. "You told the truth in front of them. Those aren't the same."
I breathed out.
I watched him in the mirror, watching me.
"Say it again," I said.
"You're the woman who proposed on a wharf."
"Again," I said.
"You're mine and you're brave and I'm going to take that dress off you now."
I laughed, and it broke into something else.
His hand slid the zipper the rest of the way down, slowly, and I felt every tooth.
He peeled the green silk over my hips and let it fall.
I stood in front of the mirror in a black bra and underwear, with his scarred hands on my bare waist.
"Look at your breasts," he said into my ear. "Look how they fill my hands."
I looked.
He unhooked the bra and cupped them from behind.
His thumbs circled the tips, and I watched my nipples tighten under his rough fingers.
My head dropped back against his chest.
"Eyes open," he said.
I opened them.
"Good girl. Watch me touch you."
