Chapter 19: Kitchens
Torsten's POV
I did not tell my wife where I was going on Saturday morning.
She was asleep in our bed at six with one arm flung over my pillow.
She had worked a double Thursday and not slept right since.
I left her a note that said only "Back by noon," and I took the truck.
If I had told her, she would have said it was her war.
It was not only hers.
It was the war of thirty-one kitchens in a harbor where I had fixed engines for fifteen years.
Somebody had to knock on the doors.
I started in Tenants Harbor and worked down toward Port Clyde.
The first house was a white cape with a lobster buoy nailed over the porch.
A woman in a bathrobe opened the door with a dishrag over her shoulder.
"Torsten Seavey," she said. "My husband's still out."
"I know. I'll tell him later. I'm asking you to come tonight."
"To Ned's supper?" she said.
"To the Centennial. Bring him. Bring the kids."
