Chapter 22: The Frame

Torsten's mother stood on our porch step on Sunday morning with a flat package in brown paper.

She wore her church dress again, and she had not slept.

I opened the door in my robe, and she looked at me and then looked at her shoes.

"Ned is at his sister's in Camden," she said. "He asked me to say he won't be at the wharf."

"I see."

"I came on my own."

She held out the package with both hands.

I took it and tore the paper at one corner.

It was the photograph from the weekly paper, framed in plain pine.

Torsten held me on the blue bait barrel with his hands on my waist.

He was kissing me, and I was smiling with my eyes shut.

Behind us, small and out of focus, a hundred people had stopped chewing.

"The photographer sent me a proof," his mother said. "I had it framed."
