Chapter 6: The Cooker
The biggest tent at the Maine Lobster Festival had my father's name across the front of it in red letters.
PHILBROOK LOBSTER, it said, over the world's largest lobster cooker, which was steaming away on the Rockland waterfront in front of ten thousand people.
I kept my back to it.
It was the first Saturday of August, hot and blue, and Harbor Park smelled of butter and fried dough and low tide.
Torsten had a lobster roll in each hand and a smile that made strangers smile back at him.
"Eat," he said. "You've been walking in a circle for twenty minutes."
"I'm looking at the crate race."
"You're looking at the ground."
He put the roll in my hand and wrapped my fingers around it with his.
His hand covered my whole fist.
"Whose banner is it that bothers you?" he said.
I bit into the roll to buy myself a second.
"Philbrook," I said. "I've never liked how loud it is."
"Biggest dealer on the coast," Torsten said.
He shrugged and looked up at the banner without any interest at all.
"He came to Dad out of the blue in June. Pays twenty cents a pound over the harbor price, every Monday since."
I stopped chewing.
"Twenty cents."
"Dad calls it the first honest price he's seen. Wyatt put a down payment on that truck on the strength of the raise."
"The raise," I said.
"Big talk at our house for a month."
He was watching a boy try to run across a line of floating crates and fall in the harbor to cheers.
I swallowed the bite and it went down hard.
My father had never once in my life mentioned a Seavey, and my father paid cash for things he wanted.
I told myself it was a coincidence.
Lots of dealers paid premiums.
"Hey," Torsten said. "Hey, Sue. You went somewhere."
