Chapter 18: The Cup

I didn't take the cup.

"Why?" I said.

Ismene's mouth twisted.

She held the black hand a little away from her body.

"Because you showed me the lining," she said. "And because he told me."

"Told you what?"

"Last night, after the Council." She swallowed.

"He said if I didn't open the garden gate for him, the blank cuffs were mine. That night."

She didn't cry.

I'd seen her cry a hundred times, prettily, on purpose.

This wasn't that.

Below us on the terrace road, a cane tapped on stone.

My head priestess was coming up the steps on Eudora's arm, slow and furious, with the youngest priestess running ahead of them both.

"The captain sent us," Eudora panted. "He said you'd gone off alone with a face like murder."

Then she saw who I was talking to, and stopped.

"Oh, no," she said. "Absolutely not. Push her down the steps. I'll hold your earrings."

"She wants to swear," I said.

Eudora closed her mouth.

The first of the morning faithful were coming up behind them.

Six or seven, with bread and oil in their arms, the way they always came, even to a dark temple.
