Chapter 15: Nineteen Hours
She set the box on the hood of an old lawn mower and lifted the lid.
Inside were maybe two hundred pages, curled with damp at the corners.
Driver logs, printed off a dispatch screen, one sheet per shift.
She found the right one without looking for it.
Her fingers knew where it was.
"There," she said.
The driver's name, his truck number, the date of the crash.
On duty: 4:02 a.m.
The crash on Pratt Street happened at 11:10 that night.
"Nineteen hours," I said.
"Nineteen hours and eight minutes." She took off her glasses. "The ones they gave the court say he started at one in the afternoon. A fresh man. A tragic accident."
"Why did you keep them?"
"Because I put him back out." She looked at the box, not at me. "He called me at eight that night and said he was seeing double. I told him the load was late and the boss would have my job. I told him to drink a coffee."
The garage was very quiet.
A car went by in the alley.
"I've been sitting on this box for two and a half years," she said. "Waiting for somebody to knock who wasn't one of them."
"I'm not one of them."
"I know." She put the lid back on and pushed the box at me. "You sat on my step for forty minutes. They'd never have done that."
At the door she stopped me.
"Tell your girl the boat's going on my windowsill," she said. "Tell her I like the gull."
Bram was waiting in the shop when I came in with the box in both arms.
He'd closed the shop at four.
He'd been waiting since four.
He didn't say anything.
He just cleared the counter with one arm and I set it down.
I showed him the page.
He read it twice, and then he took off his reading glasses and put the heels of his hands in his eyes.
