Chapter 20: The Cost
"What does it cost him?" I said.
Tilly's lawyer was quiet for a moment.
"He had a lawyer of his own," he said. "Ready to sue his sister this winter. There's a clock on claims like his, and it's already late. Every month he waits, a judge is less likely to hear it."
"And he agreed to wait."
"In writing. He said the girl goes first." Another pause. "Ms. Mahan, I've never had a man walk in and hand me his own case before. I asked him if he understood. He said he'd understood since he was eighteen."
"Was there anything in the boxes?"
"A lot. Bank letters from the nineties. A stack of statements with her signature. And a check." His voice changed. "For two hundred and twelve dollars. Made out to him when he turned eighteen. Never cashed."
I closed my eyes.
"He kept it for twenty-three years," I said.
"In a plastic sleeve," the lawyer said. "Like evidence."
After I hung up I sat on my mate's couch for a long time.
