I went down the hall to her room.

Tilly was supposed to be asleep.

She was sitting up in bed with the lamp on and her crab in her lap.

She was wide awake.

"The caseworker called," I said.

"I know. I told her to."

I sat on the edge of the bed.

Across the water, the Resolute's berth light was on.

"You can ask me anything," I said. "You know that."

She picked at the crab's claw.

"Tomorrow my name changes," she said.

"If you want it to."

"The lady said it'll be Tilly Mahan. Like yours."

"That's right."

She was quiet for a long time.

"My mom was Breen," she said. "She wrote it on my lunch bags. T. Breen. With a heart on the B."

My throat closed up.

"If I'm Mahan," she said, very carefully, "does Breen go away?"

"No, baby."

"Because nobody else has it." She looked up at me, and her chin was shaking. "It's just me now. If I stop being it, then nobody is."

I pulled her into my lap, crab and all.

She was too big for it.

I didn't care.

"Then you keep it," I said into her hair. "You keep it right in the middle. Tilly Breen Mahan."
