Chapter 11: The Hall

Cal got me out of the pub through the back door and into the cold.

We didn't say anything on the walk home, and he didn't touch me once.

At twenty to eleven, he unlocked the front door of an empty house and let me in first.

The hall light was off. The only light came through the glass over the door, in a long orange stripe across the floor.

He shut the door behind us and stood with his back against it.

"I shouldn't have said any of that," Cal said.

"Which part?"

"Any of it."

"You said it very well."

"Birdie."

"Your contract says you can't touch the client unless you're catching," I said, and my voice came out smaller than I meant it to. "So, if you're going to take it back, do it now."

"I'm not taking it back."

"Then what are you doing against the door?"

"Counting," Cal said. "I'm trying to count to ten."

"How far have you got?"

"Two."

I crossed the hall and took hold of the front of his shirt.

I made sure to do it gently, because I could have lifted him off the floor.

He looked down at my hand on his chest.

"That's not catching," he said.

"You were falling."

"I was standing."

"You were falling for a long time," I said, and went up on my toes.

He kissed me before I got there.

His hand came into my hair and tilted my head, and his mouth was hot and hard and unhurried.

I made a sound against his lips that I'd never made in my life.

He answered it, low in his throat, and turned me against the wall so the cold wall hit my shoulders and the heat of him hit everything else.
