Chapter 16: Dev's Left

Dev stood on the third step of the coal cellar, holding a mug with my fighter's name on it.

"No," he said.

"Dev," Dad said.

"No. She can't open a bottle." He pointed at me with the mug, and coffee slopped on the step. "She took the elevator to the second floor of her own gym."

"It's a slow elevator," I said. "I like to be in it."

"That's not funny."

"It's a little funny."

He came down the last steps and looked at the heavy bag, at the black wraps in my lap, and at the two buckets.

"I have a poster of you on my ceiling," he said.

"I know. I've seen it."

"You drank out of this mug last Tuesday."

"It's a good mug."

"I told you Hush was obviously a man!" Dev's voice cracked. "I told you at dinner. Four times. You passed me the potatoes!"

Cal had come to the top of the stairs. He stood in the doorway with his hands in his pockets.

Dev saw him, and something went across his face.

"Did he know?"

"Yes," Cal said.

"Of course he did." Dev laughed, a short bad laugh. "Everybody knew. I'm the only fool in the house."

"Dev, you're not," Dad said.

"Then prove it." He turned back to me. "Not a story, Bird. Not a hood. Get in the ring and show me. Tonight, at the flagship."

"Okay," I said.

"Okay?"

"You're my brother," I said. "You can ask."

The flagship gym was dark and cold at midnight.

Dad turned on one bank of lights over the ring. Finn came in last, in a coat over his pajamas, with his phone in his hand.

"Dad texted me one word," he said. "It said Ring. Am I being punished?"

"Birdie's Hush," Dev said.

Finn looked at me. He looked at Cal, and then at the ring.
