Chapter 11: Back Road
The chief of staff came off the elevator at a fast walk.
He had a phone in his hand and a paper napkin still tucked in his collar.
"Joyce," he said. "What's going on? I had three messages."
"A family matter. It's handled."
"It is not handled," the charge nurse said. "She wants to take a four-pound patient out of my unit."
I held out the petition.
"Read the letter," I said. "Read the date."
He took it.
I watched him read the first line, and then I watched him read it again.
"This is signed by a psychiatrist on our own staff," he said slowly.
"Is it?" I said.
He stopped. "He works in our behavioral health wing. He says he evaluated you."
"I've never met him."
"On December twenty-first."
"I was at work. I have a schedule, and four patients, and a boss who will say so."
The chief of staff looked at Joyce for a long moment.
"Joyce, did you ask him to write this?"
"I asked a friend for his professional opinion."
"Before she delivered. Before she'd done anything."
"You know me. You know I would never."
"I know you chair the foundation that pays for the new wing," he said. "And I know a doctor doesn't write 'I have evaluated' about a woman he's never examined."
The hall had gone quiet.
A father in a paper gown had come out of one of the rooms to listen. Two nurses stood by the supply cart and did not pretend to be busy.
Joyce lifted her chin.
"You'd take the word of a girl who nearly lost that baby over mine?"
"I'd take the word of a four-pound patient's mother," the charge nurse said. "Until the court says otherwise, she decides who comes in."
