Chapter 13: The Voice
The crack in the sky widened.
A line of white light dropped from it, and touched the floor of the library.
Where it touched, the ash curled back, and a puddle of black water formed.
The surface settled into a mirror.
A face looked up out of it, pale and thin, with hollow eyes and a crown of black glass.
I was in my shift with a cloak thrown around me, and Emmett had pulled on his trousers.
We stood side by side at the edge of the puddle, and the face smiled.
"There you are," it said. "My two bright lights."
The voice was soft and educated, like a professor who had never raised it in his life.
"Varek," Emmett said.
"You know me."
"I know the boss entry."
"The boss entry." The face laughed. "How quaint. Do they still call me that?"
"What are you?" I asked.
"A king, by trade. A man, by habit. A Nightwarden, once, in the fourteenth turning of this wheel."
The cold went through me again.
"Cycle fourteen," I said.
"You read the tablet." He looked pleased. "Well done, Sunblade. Most of your kind never get past the third ending."
"What do you want?"
"What I always want." He folded his hands. "A little conversation. I am so rarely visited by anyone who isn't screaming."
