Chapter 15: The Lamp Room
The lighthouse stood on a black rock at the edge of the Ember Coast, abandoned since before the game's first patch.
Tavi's grandmother had told us about it.
The keeper's cottage was cold and dusty, but it had a hearth, a cistern, and three beds.
We got Tavi onto one with a quilt and a mug of hot water.
She fell asleep before it cooled.
"She'll be all right," Emmett said, standing at the foot of the bed with his arms crossed. "She's tougher than we are."
"She's twenty."
"She's the only one of us who didn't break a seal by shouting at someone."
I laughed, tired and cracked.
"Come up," I said. "There's a lamp room."
The spiral stair was so narrow that we climbed in single file with my hand on the wall.
At the top, a room of glass looked out on the sea, black and heaving under the red clock, and in the middle stood a huge dead lantern with a brass lens.
We sat on the floor with our backs against the lens and a blanket over our knees.
For a long time we watched the waves.
