Chapter 6: The Stable Wall

"Back window," Emmett said.

"It's a drop onto the stable roof."

"Then it's a good drop."

I buckled the last strap of my armor with shaking hands, and he threw his cloak over my shoulders.

Below us, the common room went quiet.

"We have the Champion's writ," said the captain's voice. "The Sunblade and the Nightwarden are traitors to the Crown. Anyone sheltering them hangs."

A woman screamed.

I looked at Emmett.

"If we run, they search the whole town," I said. "They hit every house on the way."

He knew it.

"And if we fight, they burn the inn."

"Not if we fight outside," I said. "In the road. In front of everyone."

He stared at me for half a second, and then something wicked came into his face.

"You want a witness."

"I want forty of them."

"Window," he said again, but this time he grinned.

We dropped onto the stable roof and the tiles slid under our boots.

I saw Tavi at the corner of the yard with her hands pressed over her mouth, safe, and the innkeeper's daughter holding her arm.

I whistled once.

Every head in the road turned.

I stood up on the ridge of the stable with the sword of light in my right hand, and the burning sky behind me.

"Halfmoon Crossing!" I shouted. "I am the Sunblade!"

The captain whirled.

"Seize her!"

"Look at me!" I said. "Look at what he's carrying! A writ against the heroes of the prophecy! Look at him! He serves the man who wanted me to murder my partner at the Gate for the fun of it!"

People were coming out of doors in nightshirts.

They were looking at the golden armor, at the pale blade, at the man in black beside me, who had not said a word.
