Chapter 4: Visiting Hours
I didn't answer the text.
I put the phone face down on the bar and finished the soup.
Ginny had already read it over my shoulder.
"He's coming," she said.
"He's coming."
"Good. I'll make a pie."
She didn't make a pie.
She made me take a shower upstairs and gave me jeans that were too long and a flannel shirt that said TAMARACK SOFTBALL on the back.
I slept on the storeroom cot until dark, between a crate of lemons and forty cases of beer.
When I came down, the bar was full.
Strays filled every stool and every table, loggers and mill hands and a woman in scrubs from the clinic.
Some of them nodded at me.
Most of them watched.
Tobin sat at the far end with his back to the wall and a plate of fries.
He'd shaved.
He saw me and looked down at his fries.
At eight o'clock the door opened, and the bond pulled tight under my ribs.
Roman walked in out of the snow.
He wore a camel overcoat and no hat, and the cold had put color in his face.
Portia came in behind him in white fur, holding his arm.
The whole bar stopped talking.
Roman smiled around the room.
He didn't, and that was the point of the room.
"Marlow," he said. "You look like a lumberjack."
"Roman."
He came down the bar to me.
Strays shifted out of his way without meaning to.
Ginny put both hands flat on the bar and didn't move at all.
"I'm not angry," Roman said.
He was standing too close.
I could smell his cologne and the bond together, and my body leaned toward him before I told it not to.
I hated that.
"You had a hard night. You made a point. I heard it." He touched the TAMARACK on my sleeve. "Come home. Groom the Crown for the Moot. The back stairs are still there."
