Chapter 6: The List

Ginny's kitchen table was a door on two sawhorses, covered in oilcloth with cherries on it.

On New Year's Day it was also covered in maps.

Tobin had drawn Cairn Pass from memory on the back of a Tamarack menu, every switchback, every gully, every place the snow liked to break.

I'd drawn the lodge, the cat barn and worker housing on another.

Ginny had made a pot of chili big enough to drown a calf.

"Four of them," she said, ladling. "Who?"

"A lift op. A housekeeper. A dishwasher who's been there since before I was born. And the youngest liftee. He's twenty-two. He cried at my dad's funeral."

"And the cook?"

"She's staying. She says somebody has to feed the ones who can't leave."

Ginny nodded slowly.

"January dark moon is the eighteenth," Tobin said. "We need a cat. Roman's is back in his barn."

"The hill's cat," I said.

They both looked at me.

"I asked the owner yesterday. I told her a friend needs four people moved over the pass at night, and it's no business of hers."

"What did she say?"

"She said, 'Bring her back with a full tank and don't tell me anything.'"

Tobin tapped his map where the road went under the slide.

"The debris has had two weeks to set up. It's ugly, but a cat can climb it. We cross the cairn at full dark, drop to worker housing, load them and go."

"And the recorder," I said.

Ginny frowned.

"What recorder?"

"Every radio call on the mountain goes through the dispatch box in the cat barn. It records everything. It kept April third." I put my finger on the barn. "Roman's voice is on that card. 'Pull it, Marlow.'"

The kitchen got very quiet.

"That's the Moot," Tobin said. "Right there."
