Chapter 8: No Command

Roman blew smoke at the ceiling and smiled at me.

"Hello, Marlow."

"You're missing your wedding."

"They're doing toasts. Her father's on page four of his speech." He walked toward me slowly, between the cats. "I stepped out for air. And look who I found."

My hand was still up on the shelf, on the dispatch box.

I didn't take it down.

He stopped ten feet away.

Then his voice dropped into the register, the full weight of it.

"Come here."

Nothing happened.

Not a twitch.

Not a flicker at the back of my neck.

On the dark moon even his own wolves were free of him tonight, and I wasn't one of his wolves anymore.

Roman's face changed.

It was small, a tightening around the eyes.

"Come here," he said again, louder.

"It's the dark moon, Roman. You could yell it."

He laughed.

Then he dropped the cigarette and stepped on it.

"All right," he said. "Then I'll ask. Stay."

"What?"

"Stay tonight. I'll go back in, finish the cake, put her to bed. Then I'll come down here to you." His voice went soft and warm, the voice from the back stairs. "Like before. Nobody has to know anything."

"It's your wedding night."

"It's a contract with a pack that pays for my lift." He came closer. "You're the bond, Marlow. You're the one I feel. Doesn't that mean anything to you?"

It had meant everything to me for three years.

I'd waited by his door for every scrap of it.

"It means you knew what I was," I said. "And you put me in a garage anyway."

His smile slipped.

Then the warmth just switched off.

"You were a groomer I slept with," he said. "That's all you were. That's all you'll ever be. A Luna gets a crown. You got the back stairs, and you were grateful."
