Chapter 20: The Captain's Gate

Brigid Oakes had held gates for eleven years, and she had never once asked a stranger for help.

She stood on the gatehouse with her shield up and watched twenty faceless blades come up the road.

Below her, Wren met the first of them with the glaive low at her hip.

The stance was Sera's. Brigid knew it now, the quiet, balanced stance of a woman who had designed every move she was making.

When Wes took the front, the glaive swung wider and the feet were rougher.

She had learned to tell them apart the way she knew her soldiers by their step.

"Captain," said the old soldier at her elbow. "They've broken the left."

Two moderators had gone around Tamsin and Gravel.

They were coming for the villagers sheltering in the market road, with the sick and the children among them.

Brigid looked past them, at the field.

Sixty thousand people stood on it. Half of them were still turning toward the doors.

They had cheered when she threw the man off the wall.

They had hung their lenses in the air to watch a girl come back from the dead.

She was not a woman who asked.

She had commanded forty starving men on boiled bark and stood the gate alone the night the old lord died, and when the soldiers cried she had told them to stand straight.
