Chapter 15: Remo's POV

Remo's POV

I left her asleep on the couch in the study with her father's cane across her knees.

I took the Lincoln and her old cracked phone, which I had no reason to carry and carried anyway.

She had said I would do what she told me, and she had told me nothing about this.

I knew what she would say if I asked.

She would say no, and then she would get in the car.

I was not going to let Silvio Ruzzo look at her face again until I had the minute in my hand.

His family kept a cold storage warehouse in Cranston, with a loading dock and a yard full of refrigerated trucks.

I had been inside it once, nine years ago, with Gaetano, to sign a truce.

I parked in the open and walked in through the front like a man with an appointment.

Two of his men stood either side of the office door.

They took my gun and my phone, and the one on the left said, "Boss said you'd come alone."

"Did he."

"He said you're the kind who doesn't send other people."

That was true, and it was the first time anyone had said it as an insult.

The office was warm, which was strange in a building full of ice.

Silvio sat behind a clean desk, in his camel coat, with the pastry box in front of him and a coffee in a small white cup.

On the blotter beside the box lay a small round tin of film.

"Remo," he said, delighted. "Sit. How is the shoulder?"

"Where's the tape?"

"Straight to it. I always liked that about you." He nudged the tin with one finger. "It's here. A minute of my voice. I have listened to it many times. I am a little embarrassed by my tone."
