Chapter 9: The Projectionist

I took Remo down to the restaurant kitchen, away from Jake, and turned on one light over the steel counter.

"Say it," I said.

"Lucia."

"Say it out loud. I want to hear the words."

He stood very straight with his hands at his sides.

"Your father ordered every film," he said. "I cut every one."

I slapped him.

It cracked through the empty kitchen, and he didn't lift a hand.

"Again," he said quietly.

I hit him again, on the other cheek.

My palm burned, and my eyes were wet, and he stayed exactly where he was.

"You sat in the front seat after Theo," I said. "I was crying so hard I couldn't breathe. You passed me tissues without turning your head."

"I remember."

"You drove me around the river for two hours."

"I remember every hour."

"You knew. You had already cut the reel."

"I cut it the week before he asked."

"And after the third one? And the fourth?"

"I held you every time."

"You made them leave!"

"I made them leave alive." His voice stayed low. "Gaetano wanted them gone one way or another. I made sure it was the way where they walked."

"Theo's knee."

"That was not me. That was two of his men who thought they were being kind." For the first time his jaw clenched. "I went to the hospital that night and told your father if it happened again, I'd quit."
