Chapter 14: Behind the Glass

Abel's POV

The shelf above the console was empty, and Dax's chair still faced it.

I noticed that before I noticed anything else in Studio A on Monday morning.

Dax sat in the chair with his boots on the console, drinking green juice from a glass bottle.

Gil stood behind him with the leather folder.

Calla sat on the stairs with a lyric sheet in her lap, chewing a pencil.

"There he is," Dax said. "The man who disappears. Where were you Sunday?"

"Hospital," I said. "Her mother's."

"Yes, I heard you carried the coffee."

Dax smiled at the glass bottle.

"Calla, sweetheart, go get yourself something to eat. The men have to talk about the mic."

Calla looked from one face to the other.

She went up the stairs without arguing, and a door shut above us.

She had left the lyric sheet on the step.

It held the words of "Paper Moon," copied out in her round hand.

"Sit," Gil said.

"I'll stand."

"Here is where we are," Gil said, and opened the folder. "The Honors are Saturday, November 22. Live, nine million viewers. Dax performs 'Stay Till Morning' and then the duet."

"With Calla."

"With Calla. The duet is 'Paper Moon.'"

"She can't carry it," I said.

"She doesn't have to," Dax said. "She carries the harmony. You carry the lead from the truck behind the arena. I mouth, you sing, and the house feed goes out in my name."
