Chapter 15: Terms

Linnea's POV

I took two buses back to East Nashville on Monday night, and I didn't call first.

Abel opened the garage door in his socks, with the Telecaster in his hand and a pencil behind his ear.

He looked at my face and set the guitar on the bed.

"I went to the rehearsal," he said.

"I know. I've been waiting all day for you to tell me how it went."

"I was coming to your mother's after dark."

"I'm saving you the walk."

I came in and shut the door behind me.

He told me what Dax had said to him that morning, word for word, and what Gil had slid across the console.

He didn't leave out the part where he said yes.

"I said yes to buy time," he said. "I don't know if that's a good enough reason."

"It's the first reason you've given me that I believe."

"Linnea."

"Don't."

I walked the length of the room and stopped at the worktable.

"Do you remember the rules?" I said.

"One night."

"One night. 'Tomorrow I'm still looking for my name, and you're still the guitarist who can't tell me anything.'" I turned around. "I found my name, Abel. It's on your hard drive. And you're not the guitarist anymore, so there's no rule."

"No," he said.

"So I'm done with that rule. I'm furious with you, and I don't need a rule to be furious."

"I know."

"And I haven't stopped thinking about your hands since Thursday."

He didn't move.

His chest rose, and he said, very low, "Say that again."

"I haven't stopped thinking about your hands."

"I heard the first one." His eyes were dark. "I want the second one."

"Then come and get it."

He crossed the floor in three strides and picked me up.

My back hit the worktable, and a coil of wire rolled off the edge and rang on the floor.

His mouth was on mine, hard and hungry, with an edge of anger in it that matched my own.

I bit his lip, and he groaned and shoved his hands under my jacket.
