Chapter 21: Warren's Son
Hayes didn't raise his voice.
"My name is on the first page of my father's will, Adele," he said.
"He wrote it himself, in the hospital, with his left hand."
"He wrote 'to my son Hayes Ames,' and he underlined the Ames."
"You've been saying it for twenty-seven years."
"I'd like to keep my share."
A man at a front table laughed, short and startled, and put his hand over his mouth.
Adele stood very still at the edge of the stage.
For the first time since I'd known her, she had no sentence ready.
"You abandoned this family," she said at last.
"You were sent to a school in New Hampshire at seventeen," Hayes said.
"I called your house for three months, and you changed the number."
"Say it again, so they hear it."
She said nothing.
A chair scraped near the front.
Teddy stood up.
His napkin fell off his lap, and he didn't pick it up.
"Aunt Adele," he said.
"I need to say something, and I'm going to say it badly."
"Theodore, sit down," said Merritt.
"No," said Teddy.
"I've been sober for sixteen days, and I'm not going to waste them."
