Chapter 20: The Mother-in-Law

Erin's POV

Dean's mother called me at eight on Sunday morning, while I was standing at Warner's counter in his oldest T-shirt.

I knew the number, because she had texted me the wedding invitation.

I let it ring until Warner came out of the bedroom with his hair flat on one side and raised his eyebrows.

"It's her," I said.

"Do you want me to come?"

"No." I surprised myself with how fast it came out. "I want to do this one on my own."

He nodded and kissed my temple and went to put on coffee.

I noticed that I was still tasting him, and I noticed that I didn't mind.

She had chosen a café two blocks from the Marlowe, with small round tables and a window onto a palm tree.

She was already sitting at the back in a gray cardigan with no jewelry, and she looked ten years older than she had in the lilac dress.

She stood up when I came in.

She didn't hug me.

"Thank you for coming," she said. "I wasn't sure you would."

"I'm not sure either."

I sat down across from her, and a waitress filled two cups.

Neither of us touched ours.

"I'm going to say the hard part first," she said, and her hands were folded so tightly the knuckles were white. "I held your hand at that courthouse, and I knew you didn't know what he was."

"What was he?"

"My son."

It was a bad answer, and she knew it, because she looked down.
